My Nordic Walking Diary, Part II

September 13, 2010 Streets of Vienna. A new combination of residential streets. My GPS app clocked it at almost 3 miles and 0:45.

 

Beautiful, sunny day, 68F (20C).


September 15, 2010 Streets of the Lakevale neighborhood, near our house. A slightly modified/longer version of my usual route. About 4 miles, 0:58.

 

Cloudless skies, 70F (21C).


September 17, 2010 Great Falls Park, Virginia: Matildaville, Ridge, Difficult Run/Cross Country, Swamp Trails and a section of the Carriage Road. About 4.5 miles, 1:15.

 

Beautiful, sunny day, 74F (23.5C).


September 18, 2010 Trails Between Riverbend Park and Great Falls Park, Virginia. Starting and ending at Riverbend Park. Through the hills and on the flats, along the Potomac River.

 

3.25.miles, about 1:15, with Ania and Ewa.

Another beautiful, sunny day, 74F (23.5C).

September 19, 2010 A circuit of Lake Thoreau in Reston, Virginia, with a partial loop of Lake Audubon. About 3.5 miles. 0:49.

 

Pretty fast pace. After sunset. Made it just before full dark, A bit humid, 70F (21C).


September 20, 2010 Streets of Vienna and Oakton. About 3.75 miles, 0:40.

 

Beautiful and sunny, 67F (19.5C).


September 21, 2010 Streets of the Lakevale neighborhood, near our house. About 3.75 miles, 0:58.

 

Sunny and nice, 68F (20C).


September 25, 2010 From Brown’s Mill Road, to Riverbend Park. About 7.5 miles, 2:08.

 

Along the Cross County Trail, to Great Falls Park, Virginia, through the park, then along the Potomac Heritage trail, to Riverbend Park.

Beautiful, sunny day. Still hot, around 88F (31C), but much nicer than the past two days, when the temperatures hovered close to 100F.

18.5 miles for the week


September 28, 2010 Streets and parks of Vienna and Oakton. Just over 3 miles, 0:49.

 

Mostly sunny and still damp after the rain, quite humid and 73F (23C).


October 2, 2010 C&O Canal path, on the Maryland side of the Potomac River, from Violette’s Lock, to Pennyfield Lock and return. About 5.5 miles. Just under two hours. With Ania and Ewa.

 

The time includes lingering a bit at Pennyfield Lock.

66F (19C), sunny and beautiful, with lots of snapping turtles in the canal, blue herons, turkey vultures and deer.


October 3, 2010 A circuit of Lake Thoreau in Reston, Virginia, with a partial loop of Lake Audubon. About 3.5 miles. About an hour. With Ania.

 

Mostly sunny, but clouding up before the predicted rain, 62F (16C).


October 5, 2010 Streets and woods of the Lakevale neighborhood, near our house. About 3 miles, 0:45.

 

53F (16.5C), mostly sunny. Had to help a lady locate two of her dogs, who have been romping through the woods – success!


October 9, 2010 Billy Goat Trail, Part A, on the Maryland side of the Potomac River. About 4.5 miles round trip, 2:20. With Ania.

 

This route is famous not only for great views of the Mather Gorge, but also for numerous rock scrambles and sizable crowds on weekends.

Sunny and warm, 78F (35.5C).


October 10, 2010 – 10.10.10 Streets and parks of Vienna: Peterson Lane Park, Tanglewood and Glencannon Community Parks. About 3 miles, 0:45. With Ania.

 

At dusk, still warm and balmy 73F (22.5C).


October 16, 2010 Billy Goat Trail, parts B and C, return along the C&O Canal, on the Maryland side of the Potomac river. About 6.5 miles, 1:45.

 

Ania and Ewa reached the same turn around point, but only along the C&O Canal.

Cloudless skies, 63F (17C). Gorgeous day!.


October 17, 2010 Trails Between Riverbend Park and Great Falls Park, Virginia. Starting and ending at Riverbend Park. Through the hills and on the flats, along the Potomac River.

 

About 3.75 miles, 1:25, with Ania.

Another beautiful, sunny day, 73F (22.5C).


October 18, 2010 Streets of Vienna and Oakton. About 2.25 miles, 0:30:30.

 

Sunny, 60F (15.5C) and nice.


October 19, 2010 Parks and streets of Vienna – my “Salsbury Spring loop”.

 

About 2.25 miles, 0:31:30, cloudy, 52F (11C).


October 20, 2010 Streets of Vienna. About 1.75 miles. With Ania. In the evening.

 


October 21, 2010 Streets and parks of Vienna. About 2.25 miles, 0:35.

 

A new street combination. Very nice and sunny, 60F (15.5C).


October 23, 2010 Great Falls Park, Virginia: River, Ridge, Difficult Run/Cross Country, Matildaville Trails and the Carriage Road. About 4.25 miles, roughly two hours, as we stopped in some picturesque places.

 

With Ania and Ewa, sunny, 68F (20C).

16.5 miles for the week


October 24, 2010 Trails Between Riverbend Park and Great Falls Park, Virginia. Starting and ending at Riverbend Park.

 

A hilly, wooded route, with a flatter section along the Potomac Heritage Trail, paralleling the Potomac River. About 3.75 miles 1:00. With Ania.

Beautiful and sunny, 72F, (22C).


October 25, 2010 Streets and woods of the Lakevale neighborhood in Oakton, near our house. About 3 miles, 0:43.

 

Cloudy, a bit humid, 65F (18.5C).


October 26, 2010 Streets and parks of Vienna. About 2.25 miles, 0:39:30. With Ania.

 

Cloudy and 66F (19C).

October 28, 2010 Sky Meadows State Park, in Delaplane, near Paris, VA. With Ania.

North Ridge Trail, to Ambassador Whitehouse Trail, Appalachian Trail, down North Ridge and South Ridge Trails. About 6 miles, 2:15, including spending some time on strategically placed benches, enjoying the views.

Beautiful, sunny, albeit somewhat windy day, 75F (24C).

October 29, 2010 Billy Goat Trail, parts B and C, return along the C&O Canal, on the Maryland side of the Potomac river. With Ania. About 6.5 miles, 2:20.

Mostly sunny and windy, 50F (10C).

A wide circuit route around Lake Anne in Reston, VAOctober 30, 2010 A very wide loop around Lake Anne in Reston, Virginia. About 5 miles, 1:30. With Ania.

Sunny, 58F (14.5C). The route took us over streets, sidewalks, paved and unpaved paths, a golf course and even over about half a mile of the W&OD Trail.

25.5 miles for the week

October 31, 2010 – Halloween Cross County/Difficult Run Trail, from Leesburg Pike (Rt.7), to Great Falls Park, Virginia and return. About 5.5 miles, almost two hours. With Ania.

Beautiful, sunny day, 60F (15.5C).

November 2, 2010 – Midterm Elections! W&OD Trail, from Vienna, VA, to Hunter Mill Road and return. About 5 miles, 1:13.

Sunny and gorgeous, but only 43F (6C).

November 6, 2010 C&O Canal path, from Violette’s Lock, to past the mile 25 marker. About 4 miles, 1:30.

The time included a guided tour by a troop of Girl Scouts of the Riley’s Lock (lock 24) lock keeper’s house. Very interesting and quaint. Furnished with 19th century furniture, and other implements. With Ania and Ewa. Mostly sunny, 52F (11C).

November 7, 2010 Cross County Trail, from Twin Branches Road in Reston, Virginia, to Vale  Road and return. 5.75 miles, about 2:05. With Ania.

A very nice and varied route mostly through the woods and along several streams, including the Difficult Run. Several hill climbs, but largely through stream valleys.
