My Nordic Walking Diary, Part IV

Had to give in to MySQL limits. Since the database exceeded the pre-set limit, the continuation of the diary resides here now. Link to the first, second and third parts of the diary are just below.

Results, so far - with no dieting, after 4,751.5 miles - lost 30 pounds and 5.5% body fat since May 16, 2005, when this diary was started. Just think what kind of results YOU could achieve with Nordic Walking and a rational diet! Have also gotten faster, as proven by steadily tumbling personal records.

On June 6, 2009 I have been persuaded by Gottfried Kürmer to switch over to a regimen recommended by an Oxford University study, which proposes conducting relatively intensive workouts for 30 minutes a day - seven days per week. Yes - no break days, but none, or fewer one, two, or three-hour intensive walks.

Therefore, my optimal mileage will hover between 15 and 20 miles per week, instead of 25. I still intend to do at least one longer walk per week and even take a day, or two off sometimes, to even things out.

Lots of people, horses in both parks and along the trails. The line of cars to Great Falls Park when we were leaving was absolutely the longest we have ever seen. Saw a couple of herds of deer and a snake, munching on something.

24 miles for the week

April 26, 2009 Streets and parks of Vienna and Oakton, including a sizable part of the W&OD Trail. About 6 miles. 1;23.

77F and sunny. A typical, shorts, hat and sunglasses day. (19.5).

May 9, 2009 Great Falls Park, Virginia. Matildaville, Difficult Run, Ridge and River Trails. About 6.5 miles. 2:00. With Ania and Ewa.

I did the River Trail alone, as the girls decided that they were not up to tackling the flooded sections of the trail and some necessary rock scrambles and returned via the Matildaville Trail. 80F (26C), sunny and fairly humid.

26 miles for the week

May 10, 2009 A circuit of Lake Thoreau in Reston, Virginia, with a partial loop of Lake Audubon. About 3.5 miles. 1:00. Mother's Day! With Ania.

68F (20C), almost perfect, sunny weather.

May 11, 2009 Streets of Vienna and Oakton. About 3 miles. 0:41. Quite fast for this route. 58F (14C), with a tiny bit of sun filtering through the clouds. (6.5).

72F (22.5C), mostly cloudy. Lots of cleanup activities, kayaking lessons, walkers, joggers and walkers.

26 miles for the week

May 17, 2009 Streets and parks of Vienna and Oakton. Same route as on May 13. About 3.5 miles. 0:55. With Ania.

56F and mostly cloudy.

53F (11.5) and sunny. (7.5).

May 19, 2009 A partly new route through the Lakevale neighborhood in Oakton, near my house. About 3.5 miles. 0:50.

60F (15C), sunny and beautiful. Saw a young buck standing in the middle of a sun-lit driveway. His doe was a bit more shy and stayed in the bushes. (11).

May 20, 2009 Another route through the Lakevale neighborhood in Oakton. About 4 miles. 0:56.

66F (18C), another great, sunny day. (15).

80F (26C). Lots of walkers, runners and even boaters. (19.5).

May 23, 2009 Riverbend Park, from Great Falls Park, Virginia. About 6 miles. 1:35.

This route leads through hills and valleys and along the Upland Trail and the Potomac River. With Ania. 84F (29C) Hot and humid, but a very nice, sunny day. Lots of people in both parks and along the trails.

25.5 miles for the week

80F (26C), mostly sunny, hot and humid. Just before some predicted thunderstorms. (18.5).

May 30, 2009 Great Falls Park, Virginia. River Tail, along the Potomac River, Ridge, Difficult Run and Matildaville trails. About 6.5 miles. 2:07. With Ania. Many hikers and even kids swimming around in the brown (after the rains) waters of Difficult Run.

77F, great, sunny day. All the rivers and streams are brim-full, after the recent bout of rains.

25 miles for the week

May 31, 2009 The Lakevale neighborhood in Oakton near my house. About 4 miles. 0:59.

72F (22C), sunny and beautiful. Still damp in places after last night's storm.

June 2, 2009 The Lakevale neighborhood in Oakton again. About 4 miles. 0:57. 77F (25C), mostly sunny and quite humid. (8).

June 3, 2009 Streets of Vienna - a different-than-usual combination of streets. About 2.5. 0:32. A fast walk.

74F (23C), sunny and humid. Strong storms predicted for later in the day. (10.5).

June 6, 2009 An ANWA-sanctioned Nordic Walking instructor's seminar, conducted by Gottfried Kurmer at the Gertung Intersport in Baltimore. A very good learning experience.

Not sure how many miles we covered, but I am guessing that it was around 5, or so. A sunny, hot and humid day.

About 15.5 miles for the week

June 7, 2009 Parks and streets of Vienna. With Ania. 3 miles. 0:47. 72F, sunny and humid. No rubber tips on pavement, in order to hear and re-hone my technique.

June 8, 2009 Streets of Vienna and Oakton. 2.5 miles. 0:40. 78F (26C), sunny and humid.

Exceeded the 30-minute rule a bit. Will have to map a few 2-mile routes in my area, as the shortest one up to now was a 3-miler.

Not fast, but intense, with strong, almost forceful arm action, paying particular attention to the closing of the hand around the handle, when passing the hip for a strong pole plant. Also paying attention to releasing the grip while passing the hip, going backwards, following with my usual full grip release.

Mostly on pavement, with no rubber tips in order to be able to tell by sound (another one of Gottfried Kurmer's suggestions) if the arm stroke was correct. A great test of the technique! (5.5).

June 9, 2009 A different combination of streets in Vienna and Oakton. About 2.25 miles. 0:33. 73F (23C), sunny and quite humid.

Once again, mostly on pavement, with no rubber tips. Honing my technique. Must be getting closer to the required 15,000 repetitions, as the changes feel more and more natural and the metal tips mostly return clean, sharp clicks :) (7.5).

June 10, 2009 Parks and streets of Vienna. 2.25 miles. 0:33. SSH (Sunny, hot and humid). Same drill, as the previous few days. Bare metal tips on pavement. Getting much better at it. (9.75).

June 12, 2009 The Lakevale neighborhood in Oakton near my house. About 4 miles. 0:56:30. 78F (26C). Mostly sunny and humid.

Once again with bare, metal tips only on concrete sidewalks, blacktop streets and occasionally on grass. The slightly modified technique is getting ingrained and a vast majority of the pole tip strokes return single, solid, clean clicks on the pavement. Hardly any double taps, scrapes and so forth. (13.75).

June 13, 2009 A complete, extended circuit of Lake Audubon in Reston, Virginia, starting with the trail along Glade Stream. About 4.5 miles. 1:20.

With Ania partly with bare tips, mostly with rubber ones. 78F (26C).

18.5 miles for the week

June 14, 2009 Parks and streets of Vienna. 2.25 miles. 0:33. 72F (23C), sunny and less humid. Same drill, as most of the past week - bare metal tips on pavement, very occasionally on grass.

Same route as on May 10 - in reverse.

June 15, 2009 Streets and parks of Vienna, including a section of the W&OD Trail. 4 miles. 0:53 - a very good time!

75F (24C), sunny and not too humid. Did the first two miles with rubber tips on. Removed them for the rest of the walk. Must be doing something right, as the great majority of the tip plants against the pavement returned single, sharp, clean clicks :)

(6.25).

June 16, 2009 - My Birthday! W&OD Trail, to Lake Fairfax Park and return. About 4.5 miles. 1:02. 72F. Mostly cloudy. More miles than "advertised" as I might have to skip the next day, or two.

This trail winds through the woods, crosses several streams, has several noticeable hills. The route provides a very varied workout. Not as nice as Great Falls Park, but a few miles closer to home. I came to the conclusion that this route is actually around 4.5 miles, not 5, as I estimated it earlier. (10.75).

June 19, 2009 Complete circuit of Lakes Thoreau and Audubon in Reston, Virginia. 6 miles. 1:24.

78F (25C) and sunny. No rubber tips for the entire walk.

One learns to appreciate the relative roughness and relative softness of asphalt surfaces, as compared to the probably harder and usually smoother concrete, which really requires a nearly perfect technique, with the hand closed around the pole's grip at the moment of the plant and the absolute need of continuing pressing the pole hard into the ground throughout the stroke - up until the final release in the back, of course.

Otherwise, there is slippage and instead of the satisfying, single, sharp click, there are double taps, scraping and the like. Must say that the latter have become very rare lately :)

16.75 miles for the week

June 21, 2009 Pinelands Trail and the beach at Cape Henlopen State Park in Delaware. About 5 miles. 1:30. With Ania. A mixed surface route, but mostly sandy.

The weather wasn't cooperating - it rained and stormed, but instead of just going to the beach, after it cleared up, we took a very nice Nordic Walk.

The next day the weather was much better and we were able to finally try out our new boogie boards (as the old ones were getting pretty worn after many years of use). The surf was quite good and the workout even better than Nordic Walking, if you all can believe it :)

June 23, 2009 Streets of Vienna and Oakton. 2.25 miles. 0:32:30. 73F (23C), sunny and nice. Wish we had this kind of weather during the first two days at the beach.

Once again, mostly on pavement, with no rubber tips. (7.25).

June 24, 2009 The Lakevale neighborhood in Oakton near my house. About 4 miles. 0:56:30. 75F (24C), cloudless skies, with a nice, cooling breeze. No rubber tips. (11.25).

June 27, 2009 Great Falls Park, Virginia. Matildaville, Difficult Run, Ridge trails and a section of the Carriage Road. About 6 miles. 2:10.

With Ania and Ewa. Relatively slow, but pleasant Nordic Walk. 80F, sunny and less humid.

17.25 miles for the week

June 28, 2009 The Lakevale neighborhood in Oakton near my house. About 4 miles. 0:57:30. 70F (22C), Cloudy and humid. No rubber tips.

June 29, 2009 Streets in Vienna and Oakton. 2.25 miles. 0:32:15. 77F (25C) and sunny.

Bare tips, mostly on pavement, with some sections on grass. Getting from grass, to pavement is a great test of technique, as having single, positive clicks of the tips, immediately after the more relaxed grassy sections, proves that the arm stroke is correct. (6.25).

June 30, 2009 Parks and streets of Vienna. 2.25 miles. 0:33. 80F (26.5C), sunny and humid.

Same drill, as most of the past several weeks: bare metal tips on pavement, very occasionally on grass. Getting to feel quite natural now. (8.5).

July 1, 2009 Parks and streets of Vienna. 2.25 miles. 0:32:30. Same route as yesterday, but a tad faster. 77F (25C) and sunny (10.75).

July 2, 2009 Streets and parks of Vienna - Peterson's Lane, Tanglewood and Glencannon Community Parks - including a delightfully hilly and shaded section of Lawyers Road. 3 miles. 0:42:30.

My first time on this route with the bare, metal tips and the new, slightly slower, but more forceful stride. There is a noticeable increase in effort, with the firmer stride and the definitely stronger push on the poles. 72F (22C). Still light, but towards evening. (13.75).

July 3, 2009 W&OD Trail, to Piney Branch bridge and return. 3 miles. 0:46. On the dirt and gravel horse trail, paralleling the main, paved route.

Nibbling on blackberries, but it will be about a week, before they ripen in larger quantities. Mainly sunny, 72F (22C) and fairly humid. (16.75).

July 4, 2009 A circuit of Lake Thoreau in Reston, Virginia, with a partial loop of Lake Audubon. About 3.5 miles. 1:03. With Ania. 78F (25.5C), but much drier air than yesterday and with a nice breeze.

20.25 miles for the week This figure will probably be higher this evening as we are heading to watch the Washington DC fireworks, from under the Iwo Jima Memorial, on the Virginia side.

There will be quite a bit of walking involved both to the memorial, from the Metro station and probably a longer walk on the return trip, as the nearest stations will be so incredibly crowded that we will most likely walk several extra miles. Update: we did and after walking with a huge crowd for nearly an hour, indulged ourselves with a beer each at the top of the hill :)

July 5, 2009 Parks and streets of Vienna. 2.25 miles. 0:35. 68F (20C) and mostly cloudy.

July 6, 2009 The Lakevale neighborhood in Oakton near my house. 3 miles. 0:42. 73F (22.5C). Sunny and humid.

With rubber tips for a change. It is interesting to note that after several weeks of using bare tips on pavement and consequently pressing harder than before, the same amount of pressure made the rubber tips slip a bit, even on dry and fairly rough pavement. The solution was to press even harder. A heck of a workout! (5.25).

July 8, 2009 Streets and parks of Vienna. 2.25 miles. 0:32.30. 71F. Absolutely gorgeous weather :). (7.5)

July 9, 2009 The Lakevale neighborhood in Oakton near my house. About 4 miles. 0:55:30.

74F (23C), sunny and great. Not looking forward to the inevitable heat and humidity. Bare tips, mostly on pavement, as almost always in the past few weeks. (11.5).

July 10, 2009 C&O Canal, on the Maryland side of the Potomac river. From Old Angler's Inn, to Great Falls and return, including the falls overlook side trail. About 5 miles. Around two hours.

With Ewa. Not very fast, but we did stop and look at turtles, deer, birds and and fish and talked to some people. Great, sunny day, without too much humidity. (16.5).

July 11, 2009 Falls Park, Virginia. Matildaville, Difficult Run, Ridge trails. About 6 miles. 2:12. With Ania and Ewa.

78F (25.5C), sunny and warm. The day of the Potomac Whitewater Festival. Dozens of kayakers participating in all kinds of serious, and fun competitions, from the falls, all the way to the Maryland Chute and even below the Angler's Inn put in.

Also, a troop of Eagle Scouts were hard at work relocating a section of the Cross County Trail, from the Difficult Run parking lot, to the Georgetown Pike underpass.

22.5 miles for the week

July 12, 2009 A slightly extended walk through the Lakevale neighborhood in Oakton near my house. About 4.25 miles. 1:10. With Ania.

84F (27C), sunny and humid. Saw a beautiful, four-point buck in my own yard, when I was stretching after the walk.

July 13, 2009 Streets and parks of Vienna. 2.25 miles. 0:32. Pretty fast.

78F (25.5C), sunny and humid. No rubber tips again. After well over 100 miles of walking hard on pavement, just with the bare carbide tips, the wear on the tips is barely noticeable. And I really plant the poles hard. Otherwise, they would slip, particularly on new, smooth concrete. Asphalt surfaces are a bit rougher, softer and more forgiving. There is also no doubt that this kind of more intense workout is more effective than just trampling along, without having to worry about the poles slipping. (6.5).

July 14, 2009 Streets and parks of Vienna and Oakton. 4.5 miles. 1:06. Bare tips, mostly on pavement, with some packed earth, gravel and grassy sections.

76F (24.5C), cloudless skies, less humidity. Gorgeous day! (11).

July 15, 2009 Parks and streets of Vienna. 2.25 miles. 0:34. 84F (29C), sunny and humid.

Felt a bit tired, so the pace was a bit slower. Used rubber tips for a change. (13.25).

July 16, 2009 Streets of Vienna and Oakton. 2.25 miles. 0:32. Quite fast. Well-worn and quite slippery rubber tips - which require even harder pole plants to "stick" to the pavement - for the first 3/4 of the walk, then bare tips, just to check my technique.

81F (27C), sunny, hot and humid. (15.5).

July 17, 2009 Parks and streets of Vienna. 2.25 miles. 0:33. Bare tips. 80F (27C), partly cloudy and very humid. (17.75).

July 18, 2008 C&O Canal, on the Maryland side of the Potomac river. From Pennyfield Lock, to Violette's Lock and return. About 5 miles, two hours. With Ania and Ewa. A fairly leisurely pace, except for the last mile, which I did in just over 13 minutes.

78F (25.5C), sunny and fairly dry. Saw a surprising number of brown-ringed snakes in Pennyfield Lock. Not being a herpetologist, I'm not quite sure what species they were. Something interesting to look at, though :)

22.75 miles for the week

July 19, 2009 A circuit of Lake Thoreau in Reston, Virginia, with a partial loop of Lake Audubon. About 3.5 miles. 1:04. With Ania.

75F (24C), beautiful, sunny day, with low humidity.

July 20, 2009 Parks and streets of Vienna. 2.25 miles. 0:33:30. 72F (22C), cloudy but noticeably more humid. Bare tips on pavement, with the exception of some grassy sections along some sidewalks. (6.25).

July 21, 2009 Streets of Vienna and Oakton. 2.25 miles. 0:31:30. Probably my fastest time on this route.

76F (24.5C), bare tips, mostly on pavement, with some grassy sections. (8.5).

July 22, 2009 The Lakevale neighborhood in Oakton near my house. About 4 miles. 0:54. 78F (26C), sunny and humid. A very good time. With rubber tips for variety's sake. 12.5).

July 24, 2009 Nordic Walking class and a short, subsequent walk in Great Falls Park, Virginia. About 2 miles. Sunny, warm and fairly humid. (14.5).

July 25, 2009 Riverbend Park, from Great Falls Park, Virginia - twice. About 11 miles. 3:30.

This route leads through hills and valleys and along the Upland Trail and the Potomac River. With Ania and Ewa. About 82F (27.5C), sunny and quite humid.

We had to do the route twice, splitting up the second time around, looking for Ewa's lost keys. The good news is that they were found and returned by someone to the Great Falls Park office.

25.5 miles for the week

July 26, 2009 The Lakevale neighborhood in Oakton near my house. About 4 miles. 0:56. 78F (26C), sunny and very humid. With old, slick rubber tips.

July 27, 2009 Streets and parks of Vienna. 2.25 miles. 0:32. Equal to my record for this particular route.

77F (25C), sunny and very humid again. bare tips, mostly on pavement, with some grassy sections. (6.25).

July 28, 2009 Streets and parks of Vienna. Slightly modified yesterday's route. About 2.25 miles. 0:32.

80F (26.5C), sunny and very humid. Rubber tips. (8.5).

July 29, 2009 Streets in Vienna and Oakton. 2.25 miles. 0:31.

75F (24C), with a light rain. Using bare, tungsten carbide tips also solves the perennial problem of some slippage of rubber tips on wet pavement. (10.75).

July 30, 2009 Parks and streets of Vienna. 2.25 miles. 0:33. 78F (26C), sunny and humid. (13).

August 1, 2009 A circuit of Lake Thoreau in Reston, Virginia, with a partial loop of Lake Audubon. About 3.5 miles. 0:59, With Ania.

77F (25.5C), sunny and humid.

16.5 miles for the week

August 9, 2009 Spent a week in the Outer Banks of North Carolina, mostly boogie-boarding, rather than Nordic Walking. The waves were great and even the Shark Week on Discovery Channel did not keep us out of the water :)

August 11, 2009 Streets and parks of Vienna. 2.25 miles. 0:33:30. 84F (29C), sunny and humid. With my worn and slick rubber tips, which require very firm plants even on dry pavement.

August 12, 2009 The Lakevale neighborhood in Oakton, near my house. About 4 miles. 0:57.

78F (25.5C), partly cloudy and a bit cooler than the last few days. Metal tips, about half and half between pavement and grassy areas. (6.25).

August 13, 2009 A slightly different combination of streets in Vienna and Oakton. Two miles. 0:31. 77F (25C), sunny and a bit less humid. (8.25).

August 14, 2009 Streets and parks of Vienna, including a section of the W&OD Trail. 4 miles. 0:57. (84F (29C), sunny, hot and quite humid. (12.25).

August 15, 2009 Along the Glade Stream Trail in Reston, Virginia. About 3.75 miles. 1:01. With Ania. LEKI Travellers Carbon.

84F (29C), sunny and humid. Saw about 15 deer of different ages and genres.

16 miles for the week

August 16, 2009 Parks and streets of Vienna. 2.25 miles. 0:34. 83F (28.5C), sunny and once again, very humid. Rubber tips.

August 17, 2009 Streets of Vienna and Oakton. 2.25 miles. 0:31. Fast pace. As I do most of the time, with the LEKI Speed Pacer Varios. Probably the next to last time with this particular set of rubber tips.

78F (25.5). Less sunny, but still very, very humid. (4.5).

August 18, 2009 Streets and parks of Vienna. 3 miles. 0:40.

86F (30C), sunny and extremely humid. Bare, metal tips, mostly on pavement, with some grassy areas. (7.5).

August 19, 2009 A combination of streets in Vienna and Oakton. Two miles. 0:30:30.

81F (27C) and very humid. Bare tips alternating between pavement and grass. (9.5).

August 21, 2009 Complete circuit of Lakes Audubon and Thoreau in Reston, Virginia, 6 miles. 1:22:30.

90F (33C), sunny and very, very humid. Thunderstorms predicted. (15.5).
